3 tab vs architectural shingles: which one should you get?

A three-tab shingle is a thin, flat shingle with evenly spaced slots. An architectural shingle is thicker, built in layers, and made to look like it has depth. Architectural costs more, lasts longer and is the one we put on, so for most homes the choice is easy.

The short version

  • Three-tab shingles are single-layer and flat. Architectural shingles are layered and textured.
  • Architectural shingles can weigh up to 50 percent more, and that extra material is what adds life.
  • Three-tab is the cheaper shingle, and it is getting harder to justify on a roof you plan to keep.
  • Either one fails early if the nails, flashing or attic airflow are wrong.
  • Our roof installs use standard architectural shingles.

What is the difference between 3 tab and architectural shingles?

The difference is layers. This Old House says three-tab shingles are made in one consistent thickness (opens in a new tab), usually 12 by 36 inches. Architectural shingles have two or more layers (opens in a new tab) with tabs of different sizes.

That is also why they look different from the street. Three-tab shingles have three distinct tabs that create a uniform look (opens in a new tab). Architectural shingles give a textured, multidimensional appearance (opens in a new tab) that can pass for wood shakes or slate. The annoying part is that a three-tab roof looks flat even when it is new.

Which one lasts longer?

Architectural shingles last longer, and it is not close. The Forest Service lists three-tab shingles at 10 to 15 years (opens in a new tab), depending on climate, and architectural shingles at 20 to 30 years. This Old House puts a three-tab roof at about 20 years (opens in a new tab) at best.

Those are national numbers, and the sources do not agree with each other. Locally, we tell homeowners that asphalt shingles realistically last 18 to 25 years in Maryland. The “30-year” or “50-year” on the wrapper is a warranty against manufacturing defects, not a promise about the roof. We go through that in how long a 30 year shingle really lasts.

How do they compare side by side?

Is architectural worth the extra money?

For most roofs, yes. This Old House calls three-tab the most affordable option (opens in a new tab) and says architectural shingles are more expensive (opens in a new tab) but come in more colors and styles. The extra cost is in the shingle itself, which is a small slice of a full job.

The shingle is only part of a replacement bill. Tear-off, underlayment, flashing, permits and labor cost the same whichever shingle goes on top. So paying more for the shingle means paying a bit more to avoid doing that whole job again sooner. For what a full job typically runs around Ellicott City, see what a roof replacement costs.

Do architectural shingles handle wind better?

Yes, generally. Consumer Reports says three-tab shingles are typically rated to withstand winds up to 60 mph (opens in a new tab) and that architectural shingles can withstand stronger winds.

Keep in mind that a wind rating is a lab number for a roof put on correctly. We see roofs fail in ordinary gusts because the nails went above the nail line, so the shingle is held by its sealant strip alone. The same shingle lasts 25 years or 9, depending on where the nail went. A better shingle does not fix that.

What matters more than the shingle?

The installation matters more. Water gets into a roof at flashing, valleys, pipe boots and other transitions, and all of those are labor details. A thick shingle over reused flashing and a starved attic still leaks and still cooks from below. Poor ventilation can cut a roof’s life nearly in half.

So ask the questions that decide the roof: how many nails, where they go, whether the flashing is new, and whether the attic can breathe. The shingle name on the quote is the least of it. We also lean toward repairing over replacing when a roof still has life in it, and we say so when it does. Our guide on repairing instead of replacing covers how we decide.

What do we put on?

Our roof installs include standard architectural shingles, a full tear-off, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge, new flashing at chimneys, walls and valleys, and cleanup. Around Ellicott City, that full system typically runs $6.00 to $9.00 per square foot installed, depending on roof size, pitch, complexity and access.

If you want a different shingle line or a luxury one, that changes the price, so ask for it on the quote.

Common questions

Are three-tab shingles still made?

Yes, they are still sold, and they are the entry level of asphalt shingles. For our own installs, architectural is the standard.

Can I put architectural shingles over three-tab?

We do not recommend it. A second layer traps heat, hides what the deck looks like and cannot be inspected. We tear off down to the deck so we can see the wood. Our installs include tear-off of up to two layers.

Will architectural shingles make my roof look better?

Usually, yes. The layers throw shadow lines across the roof that three-tab shingles do not. If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, check the rules first, because review in covenant-controlled neighborhoods can add 30 to 45 days.

Which shingle is better for a roof that is already leaking?

Neither one fixes a leak. A leak comes from flashing, a boot or a failed spot, so the repair is the first thing to sort out. If the roof is near the end of its life, we will tell you.
