What we found

This house sits among tall trees, and the roof shows it. The glass on the old skylights had gone stained and cloudy. Leaves, grit and worn sealant had packed into the corners of the old flashing, the metal that steers water around a skylight. Once debris sits there, water slows down at the one spot it needs to keep moving.

Taking the old ones out

We cut the shingles back around each skylight and lifted the old unit out, still wrapped in its old membrane. One opening did not get a new skylight at all: we closed it for good with new plywood and underlayment, which leaves one less hole in the roof to look after.

A new frame and new flashing

Each new skylight sits on a new wooden frame built around the opening. We wrapped each frame in waterproof membrane, stepped metal flashing up its sides and wove the shingles in over the top, so water is carried around the skylight by the way the pieces overlap, not held back by a smear of sealant.

Done in a day

The new VELUX skylights came off the driveway that morning and were in the roof by mid afternoon, with the shingles closed up around them. If your skylights have gone cloudy or the flashing looks worn, call us for a free look. It is much easier to swap one out before it starts to drip.
