A roof with a lot going on

A row townhome looks like a simple roof from the street. From above it is dormers, valleys, a low roof over the courtyard and neighbors on both sides whose roofs have to stay watertight while yours is open. Every one of those edges is a place water can get in, so each needs the same care as the big open slopes.

Shingles up by crane

A row of townhomes leaves little room to work, so the shingles came up by crane on delivery day and went straight onto the roof. That means nobody carries them up a ladder, and nothing has to sit in the lane or the courtyard while the crew works.

Down to the wood

We took the old shingles off down to the wood deck, which is the only way to see what it looks like. Where a section of the deck needed it, new plywood went in. Then underlayment was rolled out over the whole deck, including the low roof above the courtyard.

New shingles on top
